Welcome to the blog of the architecture students of Eduardo Mundlane university of Maputo, Boukunde University of Pretoria and the architecture faculty of the TU-Delft in The Netherlands.

This blog is a joint venture organized around the graduation project to Revitalize the Baixa de Maputo.

The Baixa is the oldest part of Maputo and is under current threat of new insensitive development. The old buildings are diminishing and the area is losing its historic identity.

The combination of the three universities is a unique way to create a dialogue between different countries and their ways of working.

The driving force behind the realisation of this studio has been and still is the organization "African Architecture Matters". See the link in the menu below.

@ Byron; something like this?

Hi

Just to let you guys know where we are in Pretoria. We have recently handed the first draft of the first three chapters of our dissertation in for comment, the revised copy which we hand-in soon will be marked, and these marks will count towards our coursework mark.

The first three chapters are basically an introduction to the project, in terms of concept, location, and theoretical approach. So basically the general background and aims.

We also have an ENORMOUS context model of the Baixa. At scale 1:1000 it is 2,5 meters long! Ill blog some photos sometime.

Soon we will also complete a detailed urban 'framework' and analysis. But the design only starts later when we have all of this other stuff sorted out.

How to put the link of a dropboxfile on the blog!

The Public Folder lets you easily share single files in your Dropbox. Any file you put in this folder gets its own Internet link so that you can share it with others-- even non-Dropbox users! These links work even if your computer’s turned off.

Step 1: Drop a file into the Public folder.

Step 2: Right-click/control-click this file, then choose Dropbox > Copy Public Link. This copies the Internet link to your file so that you can paste it somewhere else.

That's it! You can now share this file with others: just paste the link into e-mails, instant message conversations, blogs, etc.!

If you'd like more help with sharing files, head here: http://www.getdropbox.com/help/16

Happy Dropboxing!
- The Dropbox Team

Note: You can only link to actual files within your Public Folder, not to folders.

In four weeks Maputo, points of interest have been accumulating and translated to text and image. In order to get grip on these subjects, the cacophony of ideas were filtered to a residue of 3 projects that overlap each other in a certain area, and totally differ in other parts. The challenge that is being faced at this point of the design process is the decision what role these three will play in the subject of the final project. Within the spectrum of the physical, social, political, economical and environmental subjects that these projects touch upon the degree of intervention has to be determined.

Paper showing historic and contemporary development of Maputo

We've seen allot of this stuff before, but this document is in English which might help some. It was presented at the African Perspectives conference in Pretoria in 2009

Baixa monies

The project has been submitted to Nuffic -- we have to keep fingers crossed what we may collect to enable the summerschool in Delft. It is of high importance to show as much as possible interaction and production on the site and blog as to convince the donors!
